October 8, 2026
Route 218 over Storm King Mountain will stay closed through this fall and into spring 2027. In past years the Storm King Highway was where Cornwall went to see the Hudson Highlands turn color. This year the town's foliage season moves inland, to places reached by Angola Road, Reservoir Road, Otterkill Road and Old Pleasant Hill Road. It also comes later than the calendar suggests. As of the first week of October, Cornwall's leaves had barely started to change.
Put the road closure and the late color together and this year's best weekends are October 17 and 18, October 24 and 25, and Halloween. Most of the outings worth planning around those dates are a short drive from the Village of Cornwall-on-Hudson and don't use the highway at all.
The news came in a short item in Cornwall Local on September 30, 2026.
"Don't expect to see Rt. 218 over Storm King Mountain open before spring 2027."
Town Supervisor Josh Wojehowski answered a question on social media by passing along what the New York State Department of Transportation had told him. A wall damaged in a summer accident is almost repaired. Before the road can reopen, though, crews also have to fix culverts and drainage and do other maintenance. The finished wall isn't what reopens the road. The drainage work behind it is, so a nearly done repair doesn't mean an October reopening.
This closure is separate from the last one. The town's own records date the earlier closure to July 9, 2023, and the road reopened on September 13, 2024. That puts two of the last four foliage seasons without the highway. For updates, the town points people to 511NY for real-time traffic and to the NYSDOT Newburgh office at 845-562-4020.
Some questions are still open. No current source confirms whether the pull-offs and roadside trailheads along 218 can be reached from the Cornwall side. None says whether walking or cycling on the closed stretch is allowed. Storm King State Park's main entrance is on Mountain Road in Cornwall-on-Hudson, and the state notes that parking at this undeveloped park is limited. Before planning a hike there, check the NY-NJ Trail Conference trail alerts.
The state tourism bureau's spotter report for September 30 through October 6 put Cornwall at 10% color change. Goshen was at 20% and Newburgh, like Cornwall, at 10%. In the same report, Windham in the Catskills was at 75 to 80% and Lake Placid at 75%. Color in the high country is already near its best, while trees along the river corridor have only begun to turn.
A separate county forecast, built from latitude, elevation and this autumn's temperatures and rainfall, labeled Orange County "Patchy" as of October 5 and projected a peak around October 26. That date comes from a model, not from anyone looking at trees. Still, it agrees with the spotter numbers. October 26 is a Monday, so the weekends on either side of it are the ones to plan around.
Without the highway drive, the color you can actually get to this year is spread across four inland sites. Each one has its own entrance, hours and rules.
Storm King Art Center, Mountainville. The visitor entrance is at 20 Old Pleasant Hill Road, which has a New Windsor address. October hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends. It's closed Tuesdays, and last entry is 5 p.m. Storm King's peak-fall pricing runs September 26 through November 8, 2026. General-admission visitors should book ahead to guarantee entry and parking, because tickets at the gate may be limited for some time slots. Members don't need a reservation. The 9 a.m. weekend opening is the earliest start of any site on this list.
Outdoor Discovery Campus, Hudson Highlands Nature Museum. The street address is 120 Muser Drive, but you enter from Angola Road. There's no access from Route 9W. The hiking trails are free and open dawn to dusk, and parking on site is free. Grasshopper Grove, the separate nature-play area, is open weekends from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. through mid-November. It costs $5 per person for nonmembers and is free for children 2 and under.
Black Rock Forest. The main public lot is at 70 Reservoir Road. It's open dawn to dusk, and parking is $5 per car. That lot closes during New York's regular deer hunting season. Parking at the Mineral Springs Road, Mine Hill Road and Pecks Road entrances is extremely limited. The forest's FAQ dates to October 2025 and doesn't give this year's closure dates, so confirm with Black Rock Forest before a late-season visit. Organized groups need approval at least 48 hours ahead, and hiking groups are capped at 12.
Schunnemunk Mountain State Park. The park is open during daylight only. New York State Parks sends hikers on the Jessup, Sweet Clover and Otterkill trails to the Otterkill Road parking lot. The state also warns that crossing the MTA rail corridor is forbidden, and that no trails inside the park connect the east and west sides of the tracks. The 1.7-mile Schunnemunk Meadows Trail opened in September 2025 with two paved parking areas. It's the gentlest option at this park.
These sites have different hours. Storm King and Grasshopper Grove keep posted hours and need tickets or fees, while the forest and park trails go by daylight. If you want to see two places in one day, a reasonable plan is to start at Storm King when it opens at 9 a.m. on a weekend and finish on a trail that stays open until dusk.
Many of Cornwall's October events fall on the same weekends the forecast points to. Owl-o-ween comes first, on Saturday, October 10, while the color is still early.

The Owl-o-ween page lists both a 5 to 7:30 p.m. window and a 5:30 to 7 p.m. program time, so check before you go. On October 24, Grasshopper Grove closes while the Halloween trail runs. The weekend of October 24 and 25 is closest to the projected peak, and it has an event at each of the two most accessible sites. The forecast could still shift, so check the next I LOVE NY report before you commit.
Two items from the same September 30 Cornwall Local update affect the weeks between now and the end of the season. Fall hydrant flushing starts in the Town of Cornwall on October 5 and runs about nine days. In the village it starts around October 14, with all work expected to finish by the end of the month. The village's annual tree lighting is set for Saturday, November 28, at the Village Square. By then the trees on Storm King will be bare, and the road over the mountain is still expected to stay closed until spring.
